2010 Winter Classic?

With the huge success of the NHL’s 2009 Winter Classic one would ponder, where will next years game take place?  I imagine the NHL has their own criteria; cold weather town, in America, traditional hockey market, ect.  I cannot blame them, the 2009 game was the best rated regular season game in 13 years, so they did something right.  So we can probably narrow down next season’s home site pretty easily.

Already been to the rodeo – Detroit, Chicago, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Montreal, Edmonton

Too Hot – Atlanta, Carolina, Florida, Tampa Bay, Nashville, St. Louis, Anaheim, Dallas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Jose

Not in America – Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Vancouver

This leaves 9 teams; New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, Columbus, Colorado, Minnesota, and both teams from New York.

Columbus and Minnesota are too new (2000) to be in the running, 8 teams. (I know Minnesota had the North Stars, but the Wild are not anyway related to the Stars.  I know hockey is huge in Minnesota.)

Washington has never won the cup, down to 6 teams.

It will be one of these teams; New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, Colorado, and both teams from New York.

I believe the New York teams will play each other in 2011, when the “new” Meadowlands is finished, everyone wants it to be in the new Yankee Stadium, but the new Meadowlands will seat nearly 100,000 people, the effect that would have on TV would be huge.  Plus it will be… “The 2011 NHL Winter Classic brought to you by Subway!”

New Jersey is typically a solid team, but never fills their own 17,000 capacity arena.

Now there are 3; Philadelphia, Boston, and Colorado.

Sunday’s high temperatures for those 3 cities are all right around 35.  Perfect weather, and there is snow in all 3 of their five day forecasts.  So let’s see venues…

Philly has what would be the best venue yet for the game, Beaver Stadium.  It holds 110,000 people and like I mentioned before, when people see that on TV it has a staggering effect.  I don’t know if the Flyers fans could pack the stadium, but it would be a sea of orange and white if they did.

Colorado has a couple decent venues, Invesco Field at Mile High was used for the Democratic National Convention, and seats nearly 77,000.  There is also Coors Field, where the Rockies play, that seats about 60,000.  The only problem is that the Avalanche only get 88% of attendance at home games, plus they play in a smaller market than Philly or Boston.

Boston has the next logical venue.  The Winter Classic looked at home in Wrigley, so putting it in Fenway Park would seemingly work just as well, if not better.  So that’s my pick.  Boston, but I think Philly would look amazing in Happy Valley.

Moment of zen…

Watching the Opening Ceremonies for the Beijing games I saw:

– George Dub in the crowd who appeared to be looking for the beer-man as if it were a baseball game.

– 400 Russians who weren’t invading Georgia.  How is this not front page news.  We are at war with Iraq, Russia is at war with Georgia.  We’re close to a third “big one” and no one cares.

– Carlos Boozer doesn’t wear a damned hat for no damn country.

– All this talk of China being the new America, LISTEN… the 2016 games could be in Chicago.  2016 is the last year of the Obama-nation, give him 8 years and we are America again.

– France was best dressed.  Well, I didn’t see Italy, so they could be second.

– NBC needed something online so you could watch the George Bush feed only.

– The whole footprint painting thing was a damned good idea, smart.

– I just saw Georgia!  They have a woman competing in shooting at the Olympics?!  Get her back home!!

– The whole myspace picture (point camera at yourself) at the Olympics thing has to stop.  Please, just Twitter while walking.

– Ad for the What-a-burger Patty Melt.  If it would have been in HD I would have went for it right now.

Who Is On The NBA Live 2009 Cover?

We will find out later on the 25th of June who is on the cover of Live 09, but I figure we can make a good guess of it.  The basic rule is that it will not be anyone who was on a cover the past 2 seasons of any game and not anyone who has ever been on the cover of Live,  meaning Chris Paul, Shaq, Mitch Richmond, Tim Hardaway, Antoine Walker, Tim Duncan, KG, Stevie Francis, Jason Kidd, Vince Carter, Carmelo Anthony, Dwayne Wade, Tracy McGrady, and Gilbert Arenas are out.  Check here and EA Sports websites on

Wednesday to see who is on the cover.

1. LeBron James – King James had a huge 2007 and next season he looks to improve.  Or have his team-mates improve, which would help much more.  Not a more marketable guy in the league, from 1998-2008 his jersey is the 4th best selling, amazing when you consider he came into the league in 2003.  ODDS 2-1

2. Kevin Durant – The Rookie of the Year in 2007 looks to become not only the face of a franchise, but the face of a city as the ownership of the Sonics are trying to move the team to Oklahoma City.  Remember the stories of him not being able to bench press anything before the draft and how weak he would be?  He’s a stronger guy then most folks thought.  As an Oklahoma City native, I really hope the Sonics get there as soon as possible.  ODDS 3-1

3. Paul Pierce – The NBA Finals MVP went and run amok against the league in this post season.  He was not the same player we saw last season, or maybe ever.  He outplayed Kobe Bryant when it mattered most and brought the NBA Championship back to Boston for the 17th time in history.  Odds are lowered though, since the agents and people that do these deals probably already had signed off on who was on the cover before the Finals actually happened.  But, if not, then Pierce has a great chance as he became, almost overnight, a household name.  ODDS 7-2

4. Tony Parker – Little known fact, Tony has been on the cover of the French version of the game for the past 4 years.  Why not make the logical leap to the US Cover?  EA Sports might be thinking ahead with this choice, as the Spurs tend to win championships in seasons where the year is an odd number.  Parker is also quite young, only 26, and already has 3 NBA Championships and one Finals MVP under his belt.  Some might think this is a dark-horse pick but I’m thinking this will be the start of a series of wins for the Spurs this season.  ODDS 4-1 and my pick.

The “it will not happen” pick: Michael Jordan – If a retired Brett Favre can be on the cover of Madden 09 then Jordan can be on the cover of Live.  It’s a very small chance, but I will not be suprized when the year comes where he is on the cover of one of the NBA games.

Check here and EA Sports websites on Wednesday to see who is on the cover.

NHL 2K9 on Wii (Mario Celebrates)

News from 2K Sports as they are the first to have an NHL game on Wii.  This seems like a great idea, if 2K does like they always do on the hockey games and includes a ton of mini-games this will be a great game.  Here’s the press release from 2K Sports:

2K Sports today announced that the next iteration of the popular hockey franchise, NHL 2K9, will be coming to the Wii™ console from Nintendo this fall. As the first and only officially licensed NHL and NHLPA video game for Wii, NHL 2K9 will offer fans the fun opportunity to play like the pros using the Wii Remote™ controller as a hockey stick, and enjoy playing hockey in a wholly unique and entertaining experience like never before.

In celebration of NHL 2K9 for Wii, Nintendo’s most iconic video game character, Mario™, will be walking down the red carpet during the 2008 NHL Awards tonight at the Elgin Theatre, 6:15 p.m. ET in Toronto. Fans in attendance will also have the special opportunity to meet and greet Mario and have their picture taken with him.

NHL 2K9, being developed by Visual Concepts, is not yet rated by the ESRB, and will be available this fall for Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, Wii console from Nintendo, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, and PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system.

And here is Mario in Toronto at the NHL Awards…

BREAKING: Matt Ryan on Cover of NCAA Football 2009 for PS3

Via Joystiq; Matt Ryan is on the cover of NCAA Football for the PS3.

Here is a preview… (Click to enlarge)

Also of note, here is today’s daily NCAA alt uni of the day, today is Maryland… (Click to Enlarge)

And a rant… What the hell is up with these uniforms.  If, if, Maryland makes a bowl game then where do they put the now necessary patch proclaiming to the world what bowl they are in.  As much flack as, my boy, Paul Lukas gives Nike, I missed him ranting on Under Armor on these.

Next, if you want an alternate, make it cool.  I think 75% of the time it is useless though.  I have no problem when the Lakers send Kobe and the crew out in these…

Because those are pretty easy on the eyes and one could argue that this is very close to a standard road jersey.  But trotting out in all black is such a cop out.  The trend of the 90’s was alternates, or adding black to a team’s color palette and saying “look new merch, buy it!”  In the NFL, NBA, and MLB there are as many as 15 teams that have added a large amount of black to their team’s colors.  Could you imagine if it was green?  Everyone would be bitching about how all the teams wear too much green now, couldn’t we have this same argument for too much black in uniforms now?  Please?

I’m at the zoo tomorrow, and buying new tires for the Civic tomorrow, so if anything breaks, um, you’ll have to wait.  Also, thank you, this is now the 3rd most visited month in this blog’s history.

Thank you, moment of zen…

NCAA 09 Update: New Screenshot

Nothing much today, new screenshot of the Kansas alternate jersey.

Nothing too amazing here, notice the extra “people” on the sidelines though.  Those folks were not there last season.  One thing of note, number 87 on Kansas is a big white d-lineman, so is it too early to ask how soon downloadable rosters will be ready?

Blog News: Thank you to all the readers, or Google traffic-ers who have (so far) made this the 3rd most visited month in this blogs history.

Tidbits: ESPN ran NBA Live though a playoff sim and it’s Boston vs. Los Angeles in the Finals, from the pics it looks like they ran it on a PS2, that’s quite confusing, can’t ESPN afford a PlayStation 3 by now?…  A few bad sports games were released lately according to average review scores, UEFA Euro 2008 (67%),  NBA Ballers: Chosen One (55%), and MLB Fantasy All-Stars (70%)… Bill Simmons wants Lakers vs. Celtics more than anything, Spurs vs. Pistons is not on the list… Gilbert Arenas’ Halo team “Final Boss” isn’t doing too bad in the tournaments it enters… Early request, can we get that shoulder padded undershirt Tracy Mcgrady wears in the games in NBA 2K9?

Moment of zen… (pic finally came of what snow looks like in Madden 09)

Click for biggie size, much much better actually.  I like how the sidelines have piles of snow that was shoveled over.  Looks good so far, more info to come.  Goodnight.
