Weather Showdown Week II

Okay so after looking at my spreadsheet for hours on end I found an error in judgment.  When I did my figuring I saw that if someone predicted 10 degrees too hot one day, they could fix their error by being 10 degrees too cold on another.  So I had to add absolute values (ABS in Numbers) to the chart.  That should fix the problem.  I’m not going to go back and fix last week, but this week ABC is in the lead.

Standings so far:

1. ABC

2. Fox

3. CBS

4. Yahoo!

5. Weather.com

6. Weather Underground

7. AccuWeather

Weatherman Showdown – Final

For the past week I used the Sunday forecast from 5 different sources and graded them on how far they were off on predicting the high and low temperatures.

The winner?  CBS’s Mike Burger who for the week combined was off on an average of ZERO degrees.  Sure he was high sometimes, and low others, but it averaged out to zero.  His worst day was the Tuesday high, where he predicted 53 and it was 46, only 7 degrees off.

images_sizedimage_314155957

Who was last?  Weather.com, who is also NBC’s forecast, as they were on average about 5 degrees off.  Their worst day was Friday’s low, they guessed 37 and it got down to 22.

Overall every single one guessed higher on average than lower.  This means that the cold front that came though Wednesday night and is just leaving today was worse than anyone really thought.  Dan Henry on Fox was first, two weeks ago, to predict this cold front, while others were saying it would go further to the east and we would not get any of its effect.

Standings: (Average Degrees off Actual Temperature)

1. CBS (0.1)

2. Weather Underground (1.3)

3. Fox (1.6)

4. ABC (2.0)

5. Weather.com/NBC (4.4)

Yes, I had entirely too much fun doing this, and next week I am planning on adding Yahoo! and AccuWeather.  I was really hoping Fox would win, but numbers don’t lie, if you want the best forecast and live in Dallas, tune into CBS 11.

Weatherman Showdown

Filed under: Uncategorized — Marcus Ramsey @ 8:46 pm

Sunday night I watched/looked at 5 different weather forecasts for Dallas; Fox, ABC, CBS, and the websites Weather.com and WUnderground.com. Weather.com is from the Weather Channel and that is what NBC uses for their forecasts. I looked at the forecast for Monday thru Friday, specifically the high and low temperatures. So far here are the standings, with how far off in degrees the forecasts have been so far:

1. FOX (0)
2. CBS (0)
3. Weather Underground (1)
4. ABC (2)
5. Weather.com (3)

No one has broken out in a lead, or fell to the bottom. This Thursday will be the deal breaker with the Canadian Cold Front on the way, Fox has the low at 26 and ABC thinks it will be 33. This will be interesting, and I’m the only one who would ever do this.

2010 Winter Classic?

With the huge success of the NHL’s 2009 Winter Classic one would ponder, where will next years game take place?  I imagine the NHL has their own criteria; cold weather town, in America, traditional hockey market, ect.  I cannot blame them, the 2009 game was the best rated regular season game in 13 years, so they did something right.  So we can probably narrow down next season’s home site pretty easily.

Already been to the rodeo – Detroit, Chicago, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Montreal, Edmonton

Too Hot – Atlanta, Carolina, Florida, Tampa Bay, Nashville, St. Louis, Anaheim, Dallas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Jose

Not in America – Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Vancouver

This leaves 9 teams; New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, Columbus, Colorado, Minnesota, and both teams from New York.

Columbus and Minnesota are too new (2000) to be in the running, 8 teams. (I know Minnesota had the North Stars, but the Wild are not anyway related to the Stars.  I know hockey is huge in Minnesota.)

Washington has never won the cup, down to 6 teams.

It will be one of these teams; New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, Colorado, and both teams from New York.

I believe the New York teams will play each other in 2011, when the “new” Meadowlands is finished, everyone wants it to be in the new Yankee Stadium, but the new Meadowlands will seat nearly 100,000 people, the effect that would have on TV would be huge.  Plus it will be… “The 2011 NHL Winter Classic brought to you by Subway!”

New Jersey is typically a solid team, but never fills their own 17,000 capacity arena.

Now there are 3; Philadelphia, Boston, and Colorado.

Sunday’s high temperatures for those 3 cities are all right around 35.  Perfect weather, and there is snow in all 3 of their five day forecasts.  So let’s see venues…

Philly has what would be the best venue yet for the game, Beaver Stadium.  It holds 110,000 people and like I mentioned before, when people see that on TV it has a staggering effect.  I don’t know if the Flyers fans could pack the stadium, but it would be a sea of orange and white if they did.

Colorado has a couple decent venues, Invesco Field at Mile High was used for the Democratic National Convention, and seats nearly 77,000.  There is also Coors Field, where the Rockies play, that seats about 60,000.  The only problem is that the Avalanche only get 88% of attendance at home games, plus they play in a smaller market than Philly or Boston.

Boston has the next logical venue.  The Winter Classic looked at home in Wrigley, so putting it in Fenway Park would seemingly work just as well, if not better.  So that’s my pick.  Boston, but I think Philly would look amazing in Happy Valley.

Moment of zen…

Best of 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Marcus Ramsey @ 3:23 pm

This is a list of the best stuff from 2008 with the criteria selection done by me.

Best Movie: Dark Knight – Maybe it was seeing it in theaters, because when I bought the Blu-ray and watched at home it felt about 20 minutes too long.  In a packed theater it felt just right.  Runners up: Kung Fu Panda, Wall-E

joker-imax-1

Best Album: Keane – “Perfect Symmetry” – There was not a lot of good stuff.  Runners up: Foals, GZA

Best TV Show: “PTI” on ESPN – It’s been #1 since 2001.  I guess if you are talking about non-fiction then I’ll say Mad Men because everyone who I consider bright has been raving about it.  Runners up: Countdown with Keith Olbermann, 24, House

Best Commercial:

Best Sporting Event: Super Bowl XLII – To see the Patriots get shell-shocked by the New York Giants was a perfect ending to an almost perfect season.  Runners up: Dallas Stars vs. San Jose Sharks Conference Semi-final Game 6, Josh Hamilton’s Home Run Derby show

Best Best: November 4th, America won.

Best Notebook: Sony’s FW series of notebooks – They were one of the first out with the new 16:9 wide(r)screens.  It also has HDMI out, wireless N, 3 usb ports, 1 firewire, VGA out, memory card reader, and express card slot.  All of those features are not found on the new Macbook.  Plus it is available with Blu-Ray.  Sure you have to use Vista, but if you are going to use Vista, use it on a machine that even the most Mac faithful will notice the style.

Best Desktop: iMac – I shoot myself every day for getting a Macbook instead of an iMac.  Anyone want to trade?  Runners up: Sony’s LT series, and Gateway’s new line that has a hot-swappable SATA drive bay built into the front of the unit.  It’s brilliant.

Best Gadget: 2nd Gen iPod Touch – I stopped paying for internet on my phone and now just use the iPod’s WiFi because it works better.

Best New Design/Logo: Pepsi –

Turns out the internet hates the design, but here’s why I like it.  When it’s pictured this way, the logo with the Pepsi type looks like a large “P.”  The new logo is put in an area on the can where when you drink it the logo appears to be flowing out of the can and toward your mouth.  It doesn’t have useless crap all over it, I’ve yet to see that Diet Pepsi can up close, but in that picture it looks great.  Also, note the “e” in Pepsi is a nod to the old wave logo.  Everything is perfect about this.

Best New Sports Jersey/Uni:

Philadelphia Flyers 3rd/alternate jersey.  Fantastic throwback design.

Best New Bookmark: Reddit.com – Once you customize your own Reddit you will rarely need CNN, or MSNBC, or Digg, or Fark, or anything.

Best Webcomic of the year: Dinosaur Comics

Worsts coming eventually.

Update

I’ve been MIA for a while because  I have been busy with work and school.  I saw I still get a few 1,000 views a week (mostly robots) but figured I should update.  The following things have happened…

– Obama won, but he is not president yet so even though he wants to save all of us from our impending doom he cannot.  Remember how Tony Romo was the 2nd string guy behind Drew Bledsoe and had to sit through Bledsoe choking every game and Romo had that look on his face, you know, the “Jesus what is it going to take to get me in there” look.  Obama is in that situation, and Bush is probably just as ready to leave.

– I’m the grammar nazi at work.  What is worse is even though my grammar is not great by any means, I am probably the smartest outside of one manager in the store.  Even worse is that when I pointed out a mistake on a sign (using its instead of it’s) the customer standing next to me got angry and said I was wasting my breath arguing and should not care about signs.  Excuse me for expecting a certain level of intellect out of our customers, but if I went shopping and saw a sign that said “Its the best deal hear!” I would question the intelligence of the employees that worked there.  I think I will start to take pictures of every bad sign we put up in the store and post them, maybe it will get dugg or reddited or yahoo! buzzed.

– I am a fan of New Year resolutions.  Last year my resolution was to stop using straws in my drinks because I thought was not manly enough.  I’m happy to say for the most part I have stopped using straws.  This year I think I’m going to shoot for dressing better.  I think a dress shirt and slacks will be my new standard attire by sometime next year.  Maybe not that well dressed, but I do not know how far I want to go here yet.  It just seems like the late 1900’s happened and now a t-shirt and jeans is just what is expected of men.  I am not going to change that alone, but I can be the most well dressed person if every other man decides not change with me.

That’s it for now, I’m tired and it is late.  Moment of zen…

Watching the Opening Ceremonies for the Beijing games I saw:

– George Dub in the crowd who appeared to be looking for the beer-man as if it were a baseball game.

– 400 Russians who weren’t invading Georgia.  How is this not front page news.  We are at war with Iraq, Russia is at war with Georgia.  We’re close to a third “big one” and no one cares.

– Carlos Boozer doesn’t wear a damned hat for no damn country.

– All this talk of China being the new America, LISTEN… the 2016 games could be in Chicago.  2016 is the last year of the Obama-nation, give him 8 years and we are America again.

– France was best dressed.  Well, I didn’t see Italy, so they could be second.

– NBC needed something online so you could watch the George Bush feed only.

– The whole footprint painting thing was a damned good idea, smart.

– I just saw Georgia!  They have a woman competing in shooting at the Olympics?!  Get her back home!!

– The whole myspace picture (point camera at yourself) at the Olympics thing has to stop.  Please, just Twitter while walking.

– Ad for the What-a-burger Patty Melt.  If it would have been in HD I would have went for it right now.

Who Is On The NBA Live 2009 Cover?

We will find out later on the 25th of June who is on the cover of Live 09, but I figure we can make a good guess of it.  The basic rule is that it will not be anyone who was on a cover the past 2 seasons of any game and not anyone who has ever been on the cover of Live,  meaning Chris Paul, Shaq, Mitch Richmond, Tim Hardaway, Antoine Walker, Tim Duncan, KG, Stevie Francis, Jason Kidd, Vince Carter, Carmelo Anthony, Dwayne Wade, Tracy McGrady, and Gilbert Arenas are out.  Check here and EA Sports websites on

Wednesday to see who is on the cover.

1. LeBron James – King James had a huge 2007 and next season he looks to improve.  Or have his team-mates improve, which would help much more.  Not a more marketable guy in the league, from 1998-2008 his jersey is the 4th best selling, amazing when you consider he came into the league in 2003.  ODDS 2-1

2. Kevin Durant – The Rookie of the Year in 2007 looks to become not only the face of a franchise, but the face of a city as the ownership of the Sonics are trying to move the team to Oklahoma City.  Remember the stories of him not being able to bench press anything before the draft and how weak he would be?  He’s a stronger guy then most folks thought.  As an Oklahoma City native, I really hope the Sonics get there as soon as possible.  ODDS 3-1

3. Paul Pierce – The NBA Finals MVP went and run amok against the league in this post season.  He was not the same player we saw last season, or maybe ever.  He outplayed Kobe Bryant when it mattered most and brought the NBA Championship back to Boston for the 17th time in history.  Odds are lowered though, since the agents and people that do these deals probably already had signed off on who was on the cover before the Finals actually happened.  But, if not, then Pierce has a great chance as he became, almost overnight, a household name.  ODDS 7-2

4. Tony Parker – Little known fact, Tony has been on the cover of the French version of the game for the past 4 years.  Why not make the logical leap to the US Cover?  EA Sports might be thinking ahead with this choice, as the Spurs tend to win championships in seasons where the year is an odd number.  Parker is also quite young, only 26, and already has 3 NBA Championships and one Finals MVP under his belt.  Some might think this is a dark-horse pick but I’m thinking this will be the start of a series of wins for the Spurs this season.  ODDS 4-1 and my pick.

The “it will not happen” pick: Michael Jordan – If a retired Brett Favre can be on the cover of Madden 09 then Jordan can be on the cover of Live.  It’s a very small chance, but I will not be suprized when the year comes where he is on the cover of one of the NBA games.

Check here and EA Sports websites on Wednesday to see who is on the cover.
