Weekend Roundup: NCAA 09, Madden 09, and More…

Missed a couple of the alternate uniform updates from NCAA 09; Florida State… (Click to enlarge)

And West Virginia… (Click to enlarge)

Nothing too amazing in either pic.

Also over the weekend the Jets drafted Vernon Gholston, which I can definately live with, he could be in that Demarcus Ware mold.  All the other Jets fans thought this was a good pick, and it’s rare as a Jets fan to be happy with your number one pick.

Madden some pack of “Rookie Cards” you get if you pre-order from EA’s website.  Forget that, just give me the screenshots!  Here’s one… (Click to enlarge)

But here is pic that I saw and liked as it really looks like they spent a lot of time making the helmets look much better.  I think when we start to see video of this game it will have silky smooth animations.  I think… (Click to enlarge)

Childhood Story: The Bowling Alley

I want to document some of my childhood with stories of what I can remember, some will be funny, some will be pointless, here is my first entry about my favorite trip to the bowling alley.

My friend Anthony had a father who would bowl all the time, and we would go because there was a decent arcade and we got to stay up late.  This must have been about 2nd or 3rd grade and around that time a good arcade needed a Simpsons game and you would be set.  But this one also had NBA Jam when it was cool, because you were 8 and seeing Shaq jump from across the court and dunk was awesome.  Boomshakalaka.

Anyways, our other friend Brian would come along because his dad was a super-bowler or something, he had been given rings for bowling 300’s, and 300 is perfect, so that’s pretty damn good.

We were in the arcade hanging out, when Anthony was leaning on two games at the same time.  He was touching a bolt on each of the games at the same time and it sent some electricity INTO him.  He promptly told us to try it, and because it seemed like it was safe for him we knew it would be for us too.  So I tried it, and let me tell you, that felt completely insane.  It was like when you put your tongue on a 9 volt battery, but throughout your whole body.  Brian then tried this amazing feat we had just discovered.  Then a small girl, who must have been about 4, saw what we were doing and emulated it only instead of being a kid and enjoying the voltage, she decided to be a crying bitch about things.

Her father comes over there and he was a beast.  He was drunk and large, and not just large in the sense, “oh you’re 9, everyone is bigger than you” but in the sense of “my father would NOT beat you up.”  He is clearly pissed because we were having fun, but his dumb ass daughter ruined everything.  Anthony and I ran to the other end of the bowling alley because he about to do something.  You know how you will be out and some little kids are raising hell and you think, “If I was that kids parents I would…” then you remember you are not that kids parents and don’t do anything.  This guy did not stop and think that, he went straight to the Darwin theory and decided stupid had no place on this Earth.

Anthony and I escaped, but knew somehow that Brian was a step too late and the big ass father grabs him and holds him in the air like it’s Jack Bauer trying to get information.  Anthony and I don’t know what the guy said but Brian came back where we were looking like it was pretty fucking important.

And that was the best trip to the bowling alley I ever had.

Madden Not in Madden 09 (Confirmed)

From EA SPORTS:

Madden NFL 09 will also feature a network-inspired broadcast presentation. Players will benefit from the authentic football knowledge of an in-booth play-by-play and color commentary team featuring Cris Collinsworth and Tom Hammond. In addition, numerous graphical enhancements have been made, including realistic weather and grass, sleeker player models and exterior stadium views.

Looks like Collinsworth and Hammond are handling all the talking now.  After 19 seasons Madden will take some time off.  Interesting to me is the fact EA Sports has the license to get ESPN personalities and choose to go after Cris Collinsworth from NBC and HBO as well as Tom Hammond from NBC.  Neither one actually does the games on NBC, as Madden and Al Michaels handle that.

“…and that’s what football is all about!”

BREAKING: Matt Ryan on Cover of NCAA Football 2009 for PS3

Via Joystiq; Matt Ryan is on the cover of NCAA Football for the PS3.

Here is a preview… (Click to enlarge)

Also of note, here is today’s daily NCAA alt uni of the day, today is Maryland… (Click to Enlarge)

And a rant… What the hell is up with these uniforms.  If, if, Maryland makes a bowl game then where do they put the now necessary patch proclaiming to the world what bowl they are in.  As much flack as, my boy, Paul Lukas gives Nike, I missed him ranting on Under Armor on these.

Next, if you want an alternate, make it cool.  I think 75% of the time it is useless though.  I have no problem when the Lakers send Kobe and the crew out in these…

Because those are pretty easy on the eyes and one could argue that this is very close to a standard road jersey.  But trotting out in all black is such a cop out.  The trend of the 90’s was alternates, or adding black to a team’s color palette and saying “look new merch, buy it!”  In the NFL, NBA, and MLB there are as many as 15 teams that have added a large amount of black to their team’s colors.  Could you imagine if it was green?  Everyone would be bitching about how all the teams wear too much green now, couldn’t we have this same argument for too much black in uniforms now?  Please?

I’m at the zoo tomorrow, and buying new tires for the Civic tomorrow, so if anything breaks, um, you’ll have to wait.  Also, thank you, this is now the 3rd most visited month in this blog’s history.

Thank you, moment of zen…

NCAA Football 09 Update: Notre Dame, also Little League Wii Imaged

Here are some pics from the new “Little League Baseball” for Wii.  It looks very Japanese, similar to MLB Power Pros, which is actually not too bad of a thing.  Here’s one pic… (courtesy of IGN)

Next up on the slow news day is a pic from NCAA Football 09.  EA is trickling these out, one per weekday, so at least there will be something new almost every day.  Albeit not much…

Northing much, just Notre Dame’s green jersey.  Also note the clear visor, which is new this season.  Neat.

Spurs won tonight, so they keep home court at least until game 5.  Don’t want to get too excited, they just did what they had to do.

Happy Earth Day everyone, moment of zen…

President Gore perhaps?

NCAA 09 Update: New Screenshot

Nothing much today, new screenshot of the Kansas alternate jersey.

Nothing too amazing here, notice the extra “people” on the sidelines though.  Those folks were not there last season.  One thing of note, number 87 on Kansas is a big white d-lineman, so is it too early to ask how soon downloadable rosters will be ready?

Blog News: Thank you to all the readers, or Google traffic-ers who have (so far) made this the 3rd most visited month in this blogs history.

Tidbits: ESPN ran NBA Live though a playoff sim and it’s Boston vs. Los Angeles in the Finals, from the pics it looks like they ran it on a PS2, that’s quite confusing, can’t ESPN afford a PlayStation 3 by now?…  A few bad sports games were released lately according to average review scores, UEFA Euro 2008 (67%),  NBA Ballers: Chosen One (55%), and MLB Fantasy All-Stars (70%)… Bill Simmons wants Lakers vs. Celtics more than anything, Spurs vs. Pistons is not on the list… Gilbert Arenas’ Halo team “Final Boss” isn’t doing too bad in the tournaments it enters… Early request, can we get that shoulder padded undershirt Tracy Mcgrady wears in the games in NBA 2K9?

Moment of zen… (pic finally came of what snow looks like in Madden 09)

Click for biggie size, much much better actually.  I like how the sidelines have piles of snow that was shoveled over.  Looks good so far, more info to come.  Goodnight.

Madden 09 Update #1

From Gamestop.com:

Although some games are played in domes, football remains one of the sports in which weather can be a factor. Some of the most memorable football moments come when teams battle the elements and each other. Who can forget last year’s blizzard-like Seahawks vs. Packers playoff game, or the 1967 “Ice Bowl?”

For our continuing Madden Mondays series, EA Sports has given us another exclusive sneak peek at one of the features of Madden NFL 09, shipping out August 12, as well as the 20th Anniversary Collector’s Edition of Madden NFL 09 for Xbox 360 and PS3. In their efforts to enhance the drama and emotion of a real football game, they’ve taken on the weather.

To give Mother Nature the respect she deserves, they’ve overhauled everything from Madden 08 to give you a movie-like experience. One of these overhauls is fog, and lots of it. It gives a greater sense of depth and scale and makes the stadiums seem huge. We’ve heard that no two snowflakes are alike, and although we haven’t seen every flake in Madden 09, we can tell you the snow is more realistic than ever. You’ll see deeper snow on the fields, with dramatic accumulation and realistic wear from play. Player’s footsteps will leave imprints, snow will be piled on the sidelines and the yardage lines will be shoveled, just like in a real game. We probably won’t see a snowplow clearing off a space for a field goal since the NFL banned their use after the infamous 1982 “Snowplow Game.” But you never know.

Improved color correction and stadium light bloom mean that you’ll see the steam of a player’s breath on a frosty night, as well as splashes of water when his feet hit the rain-covered turf. And the 3-dimensional interaction that snow and rain particles have with the wind may tempt you to bundle up when you play. You’ll see it all at a movie-quality 60 FPS rate on the Xbox 360 and PS3. All of these subtle differences add up to give you an immersive NFL experience that may tempt you to bundle up.

Remember, these exclusive peeks aren’t necessarily the main new features. They’re just the tip of the iceberg. EA Sports is keeping the rest of the iceberg top secret for now. But we will continue to chip away at the iceberg with another exclusive every Monday for the next six weeks.

Here is a pic of the “new” weather in NCAA 09, so expect similar in Madden 09.  Much improved.

“Obama Cool”

Every time Obama does something out of this world awesome, like the speech in South Carolina, I like to say he’s got that “Obama cool” about him.  But then he went and gave me the scene to discribe exactly what “Obama cool” is.

When asked about all the attacks from Clinton and McCain, Obama said “Sometime you have to…” then paused for a beat and did this…

The best part is the whole crowd goes completely nutzo.  He’s telling us, look, I’m ready, if you think attacking things about me I can not control is going to fix America then go for it, I’ve got some real plans for this country to talk about, let me brush my shoulders off and get to work.
